Personal blog of Amanda Lafrenais.
Was gonna scan this properly when I could color it but MMEEEHHH I think it’s cute so
have badly edited phone pic of Fran and Kelly being cuddly.
I was avoiding drawing these two for awhile because of their proportions but I THINK I’m finally good enough to pull it off and make it cute as opposed to super super awkward.
Do you have a favorite character to draw? Favorite character story? Who are you most excited t introduce to us?
Claire and Kelly are kinda tied for my favorite to draw. But honestly, I designed my characters in a way that makes me enjoy drawing all of them. That was my main goal, after them looking the part, making sure this was a character I’d enjoy drawing a million times.
As for favorite character story… I’m gonna say Roger because his is, like, the most influential on everyone else’s story. I think if it weren’t for his story, everyone else’s stories would be drastically different — he’s singularly the one piece that if removed, nothing would work anymore.
I am excited to introduce Bongo and Melissa. They are fun to write. Because they’re assholes.
Got any plans for stuff after LMN finishes?
I have other plans, for sure. Whether they occur after LMN or alongside it remains to be seen. LMN, if it goes as planned, it’s gonna take me a few years to get to the end. So it’s all up in the air!
I don't know if this has been asked before, but do the toons in Love Me Nice follow classic toon tropes? If you drop a piano on them, will they just see stars and play a silly tune on the keys stuck in their teeth or die? Or can they pull items, like frying pans or mallets, from behind their back?
It varies toon-to-toon. Some are naturally gifted in that department, some are practiced/skilled, and for many it only works when it’s funny. Or not at all.
Claire can’t bounce back from physical harm, for example. Mac and Kelly are really resilient but can’t take extremes, and only pull things out of “hammerspace” out of an extreme necessity. Not-yet-introduced Bongo could pass through a wheat thresher without anything more than scratches and bruises, and can do old classic toon tricks at will, due to natural talent and training. Carolina’s the same way as Bongo, she’s just completely ignorant of it.
ALSO addendum to my last question: What were Toons like a hundred years ago before animation began in our world? Maybe they just looked like elaborate etchings of Taft or something?
They looked about the same, if a leaning a bit more to certain extremes due to isolation or not interbreeding as much as they have with non-toons in recent times.
I always wondered this in Roger Rabbit so answer for LMN. If I go to Japan and meet Toons living there, do they look more like Sailor Moon and less like Mickey? Are there "races" among cartoons as we bleed into different styles of animation? Are there weird cubist Clone-High styled toons wandering around Seattle right now in that world, and if so were there in the 40's and 50s?
Toon appearances are pretty varied and sometimes how they look on TV/film is a result of make-up and special effects. In certain countries, specific aesthetics are prefered and therefore in the media more — I mean, Carolina and Claire could probably pass for “anime” with the right conditions, but they clearly don’t where they live and work. So in Japan, there’s still be Toons that look like, say, Roger, they’re just not gonna be the ones who end up on TV. Same with other eras — just like with our media, what has been desirable and attractive has changed with the times. Just because, like, during one era super-skinny women were popular and in the media most of the time doesn’t mean curvy women stopped existing, and vice versa.
Sorry if you've already answered this one, but why is your comic titled "Love Me Nice"? I've always been curious ... 8->
Because of lyrics from “Witch Doctor” by Ross Bagdasarian (Dave Seville). It was kinda-sorta the prototype first “Chipmunks” song.
“I told the witch doctor you didn’t love me true
I told the witch doctor you didn’t love me nice
And then the witch doctor, he game me this advice.”
It was originally to comment on an aspect of Mac and Claire’s relationship that doesn’t exist in a lot of the rewrites, but I kept the title because it syncs with a sort of theme throughout the comic about affection and validation for a lot of the characters, not just romantically.
Hi :3 I love LMN a lot, and your art style in general! My fave comic page is prob still Page 13 (and Page17) cause Claire's hair is just sooo gorgeous~ :D I guess I don't really have much of a question, but just sharing the love ^^ xoxo
Hair is one of my favorite things to draw so that pleases me.
I am delighted by perfectly regular human looking parents winding up with a bouncy toony raccoon/bunny kid, I would just like you to know. Genetics/anthropology cartooning nerd joy.
Hahaha, it can happen. I’m more amused by the opposite, and that’s probably why it’s a subject I want to write about later.
Greetings! I enjoy your comic Love Me Nice very much! Who do you find is the most popular character? Least popular? (My favorite is Carolina.) P.S. I'm just going to go add to the pile of your art is so good.
It’s hard to say. People REALLY seem to like Claire, Mac, Carolina, and Praline. But people also sort of really like Kelly in a, like, weird cutesy overprotective way? And a lot of people like Roger. And Mac’s dad.
It’s hard to say. Maybe I should do a poll.
And cry when everyone likes background penguin #2 the most.
Okay, so. A human and a toon have a kid- the kid winds up looking more like the human parent. This kid has a kid with another person in he same boat- half or part toon, mostly looks human. Could their resultant kid take after the toon grandparents heavily? (Yes I am asking a nerdy recessive genes question)
Yup! It can work that way. And the reverse happens for some of my characters later down the line.
Oh wow, actually at the biggest size I saved it as, it’s really not bad at all. I can still print that, for example, if I wanted to.
Okay cool. It’s not like I needed the line-art or anything. I am considerably less mad.
DONE WITH THIS, have a preview!
I haven’t seriously colored anything start-to-finish digitally in, like, YEARS. It’s got a lot of problems but I am pleased.
Also it occurs to me I don’t know how to setup a donation wallpaper properly for downloading.
I’ll figure it out later today. I’m pooped.
You know what backgrounds are easy?
You know what backgrounds are hard and tedious?
MOTHER FUCKING BEACHES AAAGGHHNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!
Emboss, noise and clone-tool are my friends now!
Hardest part of this thing is almost done.
